I am writing this letter today as a concerned citizen and former operator of the Town of Pageland Waste Water Treatment Plants.
The controversy currently swirling around the Town Council and the entire Town is exactly that-a controversy not meant to be understood by the average citizen.
This is the same atmosphere in which the water plant referendum was conducted in 2005. That referendum was conducted with limited information given to the public prior to the vote and has resulted in the loss of thousands of dollars in revenue, with the result that higher water and waste water rates and minimum charges are needed to make the $12,000-$14,000 monthly payments, for years to come, on the now abandoned water treatment plant.
The night of the referendum I ask Councilman Tommy Rivers, “ When is the Council going to reveal to the public the real cost of this change,” to which he replied “I told Cecil (Kimrey) we ought to say something.” To this date I don’t think council has said anything.
On two occasions several months ago Councilman Rivers came to me and said he wanted to talk about the Waste Water Treatment Plants. As of today he hasn’t said anything to me or the present operator, Jon Hurst about the plants.
Since he has but one more month as Councilman, Mr. Rivers should step aside from this discussion and let his successor receive the credit or blame for whatever arrangement may follow. Shane Hancock will take office in January 2008 and I know he has many questions about the future waste treatment plants especially about financing this project.
Thank You
Finley Kohler
