On November 8th your Town Council was provided the findings of what the current cost to provide sewer and an alternative cost should the town decide to have Alligator Water take over the sewer operations for the Town of Pageland.
The Town Council voted to do nothing. Why wait?
There is no reason. The citizens of Pageland would be better off by making this change to Alligator Water.
Why is this important to Pageland? It is only important if the Town wants to grow their tax base and provide jobs to their citizens. An example would be when Wal-Mart moved to Pageland. The bypass exploded with new businesses and jobs. This added to the tax revenues of the town. The new community center could not have been built without the support of Conbraco or the 1% hospitality tax. Industry has brought jobs, increased the tax base and improved the community.
Making this change today will bring more jobs to Pageland and to Chesterfield County—jobs that your children can look forward to in the future.
A subdivision, which has asked to be annexed into the town, would bring over $500,000 in property taxes to the town that it desperately needs. However, this will not happen if the Town of Pageland does nothing. In fact the developer is now looking elsewhere to develop this subdivision.
In 2007 the Town of Pageland raised its sewer rates to cover its operating loss. The average residential user saw an increase of about 20%.
Again on November 8th the findings showed that Alligator Water was willing to take over the entire sewer operation including the town’s debt of $1.2 million dollars. Alligator would do this for a cost between $4.65 and $5.00 per thousand gallons, which is almost what you are currently paying today.
The Town of Pageland sewer plants are nearing their capacity and in a few years these sewage treatment plants will have to be upgraded. DHEC is placing more stringent requirements on everyone, which the town is not meeting.
Under the best circumstances, waiting would double the current sewer rate to the citizens of Pageland should the Town of Pageland continue with its own system.
Not making this change will bring higher cost to the citizens of Pageland, less jobs and higher taxes.
Ask your Town Council why they voted no.
