South Carolina Treasurer Thomas Ravenel, a former real estate developer who became a rising political star after his election last year, was indicted Tuesday on federal cocaine charges.
Ravenel is also the state chairman for former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani's presidential campaign.
The millionaire is accused of buying less than 500 grams of the drug to share with other people in late 2005, U.S. Attorney Reggie Lloyd said.
Ravenel, 44, is charged with distribution of cocaine, which carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
Calling Ravenel a "rising star" is a bit of an overstatement. His father's name opened a lot of doors for him, but still wasn't enough to win him his party's nomination for U.S. Senate a few years back, an office Jim DeMint won, for gosh sakes.
Just to show you how valuable loyalty is in politics, the following statement was issued this week by Rudy Giuliani's political campaign director Mark Campbell:
"Our campaign has no information about the accusations pending against Mr. Ravenel. Mr. Ravenel has stepped down from his volunteer responsibilities with the campaign.”
And just a reminder about the importance of timing, here's a political ad for Jim DeMint from a few years ago that is worth a chuckle.
And here's a link to a Thomas Ravenel website that apparently has nothing to do with Thomas Ravenel: www.thomasravenel.org
